MANHATTAN: TRANSGENDER BILL PASSES
The City Council approved a bill yesterday that extends protection from discrimination to transgendered people, transsexuals and others whose gender identity the bill's backers say does not fit societal norms. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said yesterday that he planned to sign the bill, which was approved by a vote of 45 to 5, with one abstention. Previously, Mr. Bloomberg and others had argued that the law was unnecessary because transsexuals are already protected under the city's human rights law. But proponents of the legislation have long argued that those covered by the bill face discrimination and need explicit protection.

1996年に性同一性障害者への公的な手術が国内で発表されてから7年が経とうとしています。様々なメディアで、性同一性障害やトランスジェンダーの話題が聞かれるようになりました。
人気ドラマ「３年Ｂ組金八先生」でもテーマとして取り上げられ、身体と精神の性別に強い違和感を持った鶴本
直が登場しました。その直が、読書の時間に読んでいたのが「トランスジェンダーの時代」。著者は、虎井まさ衛さんです。
中学・高校で思春期を迎え”自分”に気づき始めるときに、”性”が大きなテーマになることがあります。様々な悩みの中でも、身体への違和感を抱えて生まれた子供達は、想像も出来ないような苦しみの中で辛い毎日を送っています。
虎井まさ衛さんは、身体と精神の性の不一致を乗り越え”自分”を取り戻し、性同一性障害であっても幸福になれると教えてくれます。強い精神力で自分の幸せを実現させてきた体験をお話していただきます。

1963年東京生まれ。法政大学文学部日本文学科卒。作家。性同一性障害当事者・研究者・支援者のためのミニコミ誌「FTM日本」、同目的の英文ニュースレター「ASIAN
TS CLUB」主宰。＜人間と性＞教育研究協会会員。
FTMインターナショナル（本部・米国）会員。
幼児期より性同一性障害に悩み、大学卒業後、渡米して女性から男性への性別適合手術（いわゆる性転換手術）を受ける。その前後の1987年より、著述・講演など性同一性障害についての啓発活動を始め、1994年に創刊した「FTM日本」は国内外の研究者・教育者にも広く参考にされている。
本年度の東京都人権啓発ビデオ（東映製作）への出演、「３年Ｂ組金八先生」第６シリーズへの協力（セクシュアル・マイノリティがこのシリーズのテーマ）など、性と人権について、教育現場や特にメディアを通じてアピールすることに力を入れている。
